Land and People of the UK

UK is a multicultural and multi-ethnic society. The UK consists of four countries of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The Country

The Great Britain and Northern Ireland, or commonly known as the UK, is a sovereign state located off the northwestern coast of Europe. With a total area of approximately 243,610 square kilometers (94,060 sq mi), the UK occupies the major part of the British Isles archipelago and includes the island of Great Britain, the  one-sixth of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands.

The UK lies between the North Atlantic and the North Sea, and comes within 35 km (22 mi) of the northwest coast of France, from which it is separated by the English Channel. It shares a 360 km international land boundary with the Republic of Ireland. The Channel Tunnel bored beneath the English Channel, now links the UK with France.

The total area of the United Kingdom is approximately 245,000 square kilometers (94,600 sq mi), comprising the island of Great Britain, the northeastern one-sixth of the island of Ireland (Northern Ireland) and many smaller islands. England is the largest country of the United Kingdom, at 130,410 square kilometers (50,350 sq mi) accounting for just over half the total area of the UK.

Scotland at 78,772 square kilometers (30,410 sq mi), is second largest, accounting for about a third of the area of the UK.

Geographic Conditions

The United Kingdom straddles the geographic mid-latitudes between 49–60 N. It is on the western seaboard of Eurasia, the world's largest land mass. These conditions allow convergence between moist maritime air and dry continental air. In this area, the large temperature variation creates atmospheric instability and this is a major factor that influences the often unsettled weather the country experiences, where many types of weather can be experienced in a single day.

For example, during the summer there can sometimes be a large difference in temperature between the far north of Scotland (including the Islands) and south-east of England – usually around 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) but can be as much as 20 °C (68 °F) or more.

British people (also referred to as Britons, informally as Brits, or archaically as Britishers) are citizens or natives of the United Kingdom, Crown Dependencies, British Overseas Territories, and their descendants.British nationality law governs modern British citizenship and nationality, which can be acquired, for instance, by descent from British nationals.

The British is a diverse, multi-national and multicultural society, with "strong regional accents, expressions and identities".

The social structure of Britain has changed radically since the nineteenth century, with the decline in religious observance, enlargement of the middle class, and increased ethnic diversity.
