Changes to the immigration rules from 6 April 2017

March 17, 2017

The government have published their statement of changes due to come into effect on the 6 April 2017. The following changes will affect LSE students:

  • Definition of a working week - from the 6 April 2017, the Home Office will define a working week as a seven dya period starting on a Monday.  This means that during term-time, Tier 4 students will be able to work a maximum of 20 hours in the seven day period from Monday to Sunday.

  • Permission to extend visa from official financial sponsor - the rules clarify that you only require permissiono to extend your visa if you have been wholly sponsored (tuition fees and living costs) by a government or an internationsl scholarship agency within the last 12 months.

  • Further Immigration Changes

    Nov. 11, 2016

If a student is applying for a new visa in the UK because they have completed re-sits or repeat teaching, they no longer need to meet the academic progression requirements.  After the 24th November this means that you will not be required to return home to extend your visa, but will be able to apply in the UK after you have completed your repeat teaching.  However, this only applies if you are receiving repeat teaching in the same programme. You cannot apply for repeat teaching in a new programme.  See our information on changes in circumstances.

Dependant Financial Requirements  - dependants are now required to hold £845 per month up to a maximum of nine months depending on the length of leave they will be granted.  Therefore, if a dependant is extending their visa for two months, but their full length of their visa will be six months they will need to show £845 x 6 months.  Dependants on the Tier 4 (Doctorate Extension Scheme) only need to show £845 x 2 months.

Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules

    Nov. 9, 2016

The Home Office released a statement of changes to the immigration rules on the 3 November 2016.  The main changes affecting students will affect applications made on or after the 24 November 2016 and include:

    Applications from overstayers will only be accepted within 14 days of leave expiring - in the majority of cases LSE does not support applications from overstayers in the UK;

English language requirements - when relying on the exemption from a SELT because a student has obtained a qualification to a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in the UK from a majority English speaking country, the applicant will need to include an original document from UK NARIC which confirms the equivalency. If the qualification was gained in the UK, it must be a Bachelors, Masters or PhD and not an equivalent of these.

    Changes to the Immigration Rules

    July, 16th 2015

A new statement of changes to the Immigration Rules was published on 13 July 2015.  This latest statement mainly affects Tier 4 Student Migrants, with some amendments also being made to administrative review procedure, family and private life rules, and visit visa rules.

Amendments have been made to the maintenance requirements for Tier 4 Migrants, generally increasing the amounts required. Any new applicants should review the requirements carefully before applying.

New students applying to study at publicly-funded further education colleges will now lose all work rights. Prior to the change, such students were allowed to work for a limit of 10 hours per week, however this is now being removed entirely.

With effect from 14 July 2015, Tier 4 Migrants will now be granted entry clearance with a start date from either one month before the course starts, or seven days before the intended date of travel, whichever is later. This is to ensure that students wishing to travel to the UK close to or after their course start date can do so.

    Making a Tier 4 application on 4 July 2015

    July, 2nd 2015

From 5 July 2015, the Tier 4 application forms will automatically calculate how much of the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) applicants have to pay. This change will affect the Tier 4 application system on 4 July 2015.

    • If you are applying in the UK then you should complete your Tier 4 application and pay the IHS before 6:59 in the morning on Saturday 4 July, otherwise you should start a new application after this time.  If you try to continue with an existing application after this time then your application might be rejected and/or you might have to pay the IHS twice.

    • If you are applying overseas then you should pay the IHS and submit your Tier 4 application before 5:59 in the evening (UK time).  If you continue with an existing application after this time then it might be rejected and/or you might have to pay the IHS twice.  Therefore if you are not able to complete an existing application before this time you should start a new application.
